II. First Impressions of Donnie Darko

III. Origin & tidbits

- Filmed in 28 days (coincidentally about the time depicted in the movie)
- It was supposed to go straight to home video but Drew Barrymore released it through her production company.
- At the wrap party, Seth Rogen and Jake Gyllenhaal agreed they had no idea what the movie was about.
- To try to create a more psychotic development for the character, Jake Gyllenhaal tried to rarely blink.
- Seth Rogen's feature film debut.
- Sam Raimi came to the movie's rescue for the movie theater scene. They were supposed to see C.H.U.D. but couldn't secure the rights so they saw Evil Dead instead at no charge.
- Vince Vaughn turned down the role because he felt he was too old (could it be the story he tells in Swingers about the audition where he had to play someone 11?) Mark Wahlberg wanted the part but eventually turned it down because he didn't want to talk with a lisp.
- Donnie succumbs to the three temptations Patrick Swayze discusses - alcohol, drugs, premaritial sex.
- The concept of someone jumping on the trampoline wearing a Ronald Reagan mask was taken from a photo of Hunter S. Thompson.
- Swayze wore his own clothes from the 80's in it.
- Donnie and friends riding their bikes after the party was an homage to ET.
- The estate of Peyo gave permission to show a Smurf doll and talk about Smurf sex.
- In the beginning of the film, Rose is reading Stephen King's It. The passenger in Frank's car at the end of the movie is a clown.
